Sulfur dioxide is the chemical compound with the formula SO2.  It is a toxic, colorless gas or liquid with a strong, rotten smell.  It is produced from the burning of fossil fuels and the smelting of minerals that contain sulfur (such as aluminum, copper, lead, or iron).  Sulfur dioxide dissolves easily in water to form sulfuric acid – a major component of acid rain.
