Reynolds number

Nov 18, 2020

The Reynolds number (Re) is used to predict how liquids flow under different conditions. At low Re, liquids flow by “laminar” (sheet-like) while at high Re, liquid flows become turbulent. The Reynolds number can for instance, be used to study liquid flow in a pipe or the passage of air over an aircraft wing. It is used to predict the transition from laminar to turbulent flow and to study flows at different sizes, such as the difference between an tiny aircraft model in a wind tunnel and the full size plane in the air.
