Pheromones are secreted (or excreted) chemical substances that typically trigger a social response in animals of the same species.  Examples of pheromones include alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, and sex pheromones.  Pheromones are used extensively by insects but are also used by some vertebrates and plants.
